Plot to exhume Kafwaya’s body unearthed

By BARNABAS ZULUA CLANDESTINE plot to exhume the body of slain former Lunte lawmaker Mutotwe Kafwaya has been suspected after unknown people allegedly visited his village several times, asking residents about his burial site.Kafwaya’s younger brother, Mukupa Busuma, said the family had received reports of people moving around the village in Lunte, questioning residents about where the former lawmaker was buried.Kafwaya was shot dead by Zambia Army Special Forces during an operation at the residence of Brian Mundubile in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area.In an interview yesterday, Mr Busuma said he had been informed that a vehicle had stopped in the village and its occupants questioned schoolchildren returning home about Kafwaya’s burial place.“I have heard that there was a vehicle which passed through our village. They stopped there and asked the kids who were coming from school where Mutotwe Kafwaya was buried,” he said.Mr Busuma said the children reportedly told the visitors that they did not know the exact burial site, although they knew that Kafwaya had been buried in Lunte. He said the individuals later proceeded to Tapa School, where Kafwaya had previously attended school, and allegedly asked the headteacher about his burial place.“They approached the headmaster, and I am told the headmaster didn’t also know where this person was buried,” Mr Busuma said.He said the reported visits were not an isolated incident, adding that he had been informed that the individuals had returned to the village several times.“They have been going there. This should be maybe the third or fourth time, if I am not mistaken, according to the information I have received,” he said.Mr Busuma said the family was baffled by the repeated inquiries, questioning why anyone would be interested in locating his younger brother’s grave.“We don’t know what kind of people these are, where they are coming from and what they want from the burial site of Mutotwe Kafwaya,” he said.“I don’t know what they want. I don’t know what interest they have in his body.”Mr Busuma said there was speculation among residents that the visitors wanted to retrieve Kafwaya’s body, although he could not independently establish their identities or intentions.“It is believed that they want to get the body from there. That is what people are saying,” he said. He, however, expressed confidence that the visitors would not succeed in locating the grave, insisting that the family would not disclose its whereabouts.“It will be very difficult for anyone to know where we buried our brother. They will not know,” Mr Busuma said.He further said those involved in Kafwaya’s killing would continue to be haunted by what had happened.“As long as they are involved in his killing, then they will not know anything,” he said.Mr Busuma said the family remained surprised that people were allegedly returning to the village to ask questions about the burial site without explaining who they were or what they wanted.“We are also surprised, and we don’t know the reason why people can continue going to the village more than twice, and they still continue going there and asking where this person was buried,” he said.He said he hoped to travel to the village to investigate the reports personally once he had the resources to do so.“I am sure when I get some money, I will just have to travel there. I can see what exactly is happening there,” Mr Busuma said. The reported visits and alleged plot to exhume Kafwaya’s body could not be independently verified. It was also not established whether the individuals were connected to any State institution or whether they intended to exhume the body.
