Bishop Mwamba case reaches UK Parliament

By BARNABAS ZULUTHE treason case involving retired Anglican Bishop Trevor Mwamba has been raised in the United Kingdom Parliament, with Liberal Democrat Lord Roberts of Llandudno seeking answers from the British Government over the charges and conditions surrounding the bishop’s detention.Lord Roberts has tabled a written parliamentary question asking the government to explain what information it has received concerning the factual basis of the treason charge against Bishop Mwamba.He has also asked whether the British government has sought assurances that the former Anglican Bishop of Botswana will receive due process and a fair and prompt trial.Lord Roberts also wants to know whether representatives of the British High Commission in Lusaka have established Bishop Mwamba’s “location, condition and treatment” and whether he has been granted regular access to his lawyers, family and necessary medical care.The question appears on the UK Parliament’s official business records for September 2, 2026.Lord Roberts asked: “What information they have received concerning the factual basis for the treason charge brought against the Right Reverend Dr Trevor Mwamba in Zambia; and whether they have sought assurances that he will receive due process and a fair and prompt trial.”He also asked whether British diplomatic representatives had sought to establish “the location, condition and treatment” of Bishop Mwamba and whether he had been granted regular access to his legal representatives, family and necessary medical care.The intervention comes amid growing international concern over the detention of Bishop Mwamba and other opposition figures following Zambia’s August 13 general elections.Bishop Mwamba was reportedly transferred from Matero Police Cells to Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe on Monday.According to concerns raised over his detention, prison authorities allegedly denied him access to medication as well as visits from lawyers and family members.Opposition leader Brian Mundubile, lawyer Makebi Zulu and other political figures are also being held at Mukobeko.The development has also drawn condemnation from the Anglican Church of Southern Africa.Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba said the Church was “deeply disturbed at the detention of a number of opposition figures, including Bishop Trevor Mwamba.”Lord Roberts is a Welsh Liberal Democrat politician, Methodist minister and life peer.The UK government is expected to respond to the parliamentary question, potentially placing further international attention on Bishop Mwamba’s detention and the treason allegations against him.
