LUSAMBO UNABLE TO ATTEND COURT

By CHIKUMBU KATEBE THE Lusaka High Court under Economic and Financial Crimes Court has given orders for directions in the appeals case involving the former Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo. This is in a case in which Mr Lusambo appealed against his conviction in the Lusaka Magistrate Court on two counts of possessing property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime. Mr Lusambo’s lawyer, Charles Changano was at the EFCC court yesterday for a status conference for orders for directions in the case. Mr Changano said his client was not before court because the Zambia Correctional Service authorities have transferred him from Mwembeshi correctional facility to the Livingstone Correctional Facility, which has made communication very difficult. The lawyer said it had become almost impossible to engage his client for instruction, and especially that he was required to be brought to Lusaka to appear before court. This is an appeals case from the Subordinate Court which came up today for orders for directions. “The matter will come for hearing on November 25, 2026, but my client was not present, but we are aware that he was moved to Livingstone, but we will write to the Director of the Correctional Facilities so that he can be brought back to Lusaka for easy of instructions because it’s very difficult for us to go to Livingstone and for them to bring him to Lusaka,” he explained. He explained that the situation was an administrative issue with the Correctional Facility services with whom we hope to engage to help us to bring Mr Lusambo to Lusaka, as it’s their prerogative to move and keep prisoners where necessary. “We shall need to look at into those administrative matters, we can’t force them, but we can only ask. “It’s them who know why they moved him there, so we will ask that he be brought back to Lusaka for easy access to the court,” he said. The matters before court involves a four-bedroom house and an incomplete block of six flats in Chamba Valley, valued at about K22 million, which property the court found a disparity between Mr Lusambo’s income and their value, leading to his conviction. Mr Lusambo was serving a three (03) year sentence in the matter. Ends
