No protests against Zambia at UN – Haimbe

By MUBITA KATETE FOREIGN Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe says Zambia has been warmly received at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, dismissing reports of protests against the country by Zambians living in the diaspora. Mr Haimbe, who is representing President Hakainde Hichilema said reports circulating on social media about Zambians protesting at the UN headquarters were untrue. “There is no such thing as protests against Zambia. Let us not listen to the allegations on social media that there is any sort of protest against Zambia,” he said. He said Zambia’s participation in the General Assembly had instead been characterised by engagements with various stakeholders and a positive reception. Mr Haimbe said he had also interacted with Zambians living in the United States, who he said expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the August 13, 2026 general elections. He said some members of the Zambian community had expressed happiness over President Hichilema’s re-election and optimism about the country’s continued development. Mr Haimbe has since called on Zambians to put their political differences aside and focus on peace and national unity following the elections. “Let us continue talking peace and unity. Let us live together. It is one of those things, those who voted for and those who voted against; we are now past the election, let us move forward,” he said. Meanwhile, Zambia has established diplomatic relations with the Principality of Andorra following the signing of a joint statement between the two countries. Mr Haimbe signed the agreement with Andorra’s Foreign Affairs Minister Imma Tor Faus on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. According to First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at Zambia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Namatama Njekwa, the agreement is expected to open opportunities for cooperation in areas including tourism, digital governance, financial services, education and climate action. Ms Njekwa said Zambia also participated in a high-level meeting on the implementation of the Pact for the Future. Health Minister Professor Roma Chilengi also attended the launch of a report focusing on reforms to the global health system and governance.
