Now Police confirm Jay Jay arrest

By BARNABAS ZULU THE Zambia Police Service has announced the apprehension of former Petauke Independent Member of Parliament Emmanuel Jay Banda, who is in the country awaiting formal arrest and charging. On Thursday, Government said it was unaware that Mr Banda had been apprehended from his hideout in Mozambique and that the nation would be informed should there be new developments. In a press statement yesterday, Police spokesperson Chipo Kaitisha said Mr Banda had been apprehended but did not disclose the circumstances surrounding his capture. “The Zambia Police Service wishes to inform the public that former Petauke Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Jay Banda, has been apprehended. He is currently in the country awaiting formal arrest and charging,” Ms Kashinka said in a short but terse statement. Ms Kaitisha said the police would provide more details on the matter in due course. Mr Banda had been reported to have been apprehended near the border area between Zimbabwe and Mozambique by a joint security task force. However, the police statement did not confirm the location of his apprehension or provide details of the operation that led to his capture. There were also reports that security officers had tracked Mr Banda through telephone communications involving his family, but these details had not been confirmed by the police by press time. Mr Banda’s apprehension marks a development in the case involving the former lawmaker, whose whereabouts had been a subject of public interest. On Thursday, Home Affairs and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo said Government had no information confirming that Mr Banda, who is wanted by Zambian authorities, had been taken into custody in Mozambique. Mr Matembo said the relevant authorities would inform the public if there were any new developments regarding the former lawmaker. “The relevant authorities will update the public if there are any new developments,” Mr Matembo said. /////////////////////
