RELIABLE water supply in health facilities is non-negotiable because access to clean water is essential for effective healthcare delivery and the prevention of hospital-acquired infections, Health Minister Professor Roma Chilengi has said.

Prof Chilengi said water was a fundamental human right, particularly in healthcare facilities. He was speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) water reticulation project in Lusaka

He has warned that water shortages in health facilities often increased the risk of infections among patients and should therefore never be accepted.

"Patients seeking treatment for conditions such as broken bones should not be exposed to additional illnesses because of inadequate water and sanitation services.

Government has directed that rural health facilities be equipped with boreholes and solar-powered water systems to improve access to reliable water," Prof Chilengi said.

He noted the contributions of former health sector leadership, including Dr Elijah Mchima, and the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation in initiating and supporting the project.

He has also commended the Lusaka District Commissioner, UTH management, the hospital's maintenance and engineering team, and Lusaka Water for working together to address the hospital's longstanding water supply challenges.

Prof Chilengi has urged hospital management to maintain the new system and prevent water wastage caused by leaking pipes and faulty taps.

"Supplying water to UTH comes at a significant cost, particularly amid the country's energy challenges, making responsible water use essential," Prof Chilengi said.

He has commended Lusaka Water for incorporating chlorination into the system to ensure water safety, stating that the project was expected to benefit all major facilities within the UTH complex.
