Zambia is destroyed, claims Changala

..... alleges that citizens were now watching helplessly as institutions of governance were allegedly being abused. By BARNABAS ZULU CIVIL rights activist Brebner Changala says Zambia is being destroyed under the leadership of people who were elected in 2021, warning that the country's democratic institutions and civil liberties are under threat. Mr Changala says he never imagined that Zambia would lose its democracy in the manner he believes is happening, 62 years after independence. "It's really mind-boggling how the destruction of our country is happening within our own lifetime and before our eyes. I never thought we could lose our democracy in this manner and through the very people we elected in 2021. It's like a horror dream," he said. Mr Changala said the country's forefathers fought for its rights, freedoms and liberties, but citizens were now watching helplessly as institutions of governance were allegedly being abused. "Our forefathers died fighting for our rights, freedoms and liberties, but here we are seated 62 years later, hopelessly folding our arms in the comfort of our homes, while the country is being destroyed on all fronts," he said. He listed the Judiciary, police, Legislature, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), Office of the Public Protector, Civil Service, trade unions, student movement and political parties as institutions he believes have been compromised. Mr Changala also alleged that opposition politics had been criminalised, leaving political players vulnerable and forcing some opposition members to seek refuge outside the country. "Zambia's voice of resistance is now echoing from afar in the diaspora, for at home, the state machinery is alert and vicious to pounce on dissent and 'hate speech' and 'sedition'," he said. He said many Zambians had become vulnerable and desperate because they appeared to have lost hope for a better present and future.
