Explain UTH dialysis situation, parley tells Health Minister

FIRST Deputy Speaker Catherine Namungala has directed Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya to inform the nation regarding the deteriorating dialysis services at Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

Ms Namungala said it was important that the nation knew the exact position of the situation which the public was complaining about.
She made the directive yesterday when Monze Central Member of Parliament Jack Mwiimbu raise a point of order in Parliament yesterday stressing that the dialysis services at the largest hospital in the country were not operational.
Mr Mwiimbu said many lives would be lost if the government does not act to address the situation.
He said that private hospitals which had this service were charging patients US$100 but this was costly to many poor people.
“Madam Speaker, there are serious challenge at the University Teaching Hospital because the dialysis services are not operational and people who are supposed to access this are disadvantaged.
“People who are supposed to access this services and are not doing so will die.
“I want to ask the Minister of Health why he has allowed the situation at the hospital to deteriorate. The government need to do something on this situation because a lot of lives will be lost,” Mr Mwiimbu said.
And makng a ruling on the matter, Ms Namugala asked the minister to ensure that the nation was informed about the situation.
She said that it was important that Zambians understood what was transpiring at the largest hospital.
