DEC nabs 14 for unlawful cannabis cultivation

ABOUT 14 people, among them small-scale farmers have been arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Central, Luapula and Western provinces for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants.

DEC public relations officer, Theresa Katongo in a statement said that four small-scale farmers were arrested in Luapula Province for unlawful cultivation of cannabis plants weighing 1.5 contrary to Cap 96 of the laws of Zambia.

Ms Katongo identified the four farmers of Chifunabuli as Broka Chipulu 27, Mwila Chintala 46, John Sekwe 49 and Kennedy Chola 23.

She said in Central Province, DEC arrested Brandon Mumbwayi 39, Mickey Bwatu 32 and Schoolman Sibusiku 32 and four others for unlawful cultivation of cannabis plants weighing 407 kilograms.

And in Western Province, DEC arrested three people for unlawful cultivation of cannabis plants weighing 350 kilograms.

Ms Katongo identifed the three as Biemba Kalenga, aged 53, Mushiba Chafwila, 23 and Chikasa Kalenga, 28. She said the suspects would appear in court soon.
