NDOLA mayor Amon Chisenga has appealed to councillors from the 28 wards in the district to leave the petition to increase their emoluments to relevant authorities.

And Government has warned that it will not tolerate infighting between councillors and officers at the expense of development.

Speaking in Ndola at the ongoing orientation workshop for councillors on the operations of the council and its organs, Mr Chisenga acknowledged that he was alive to the fact that councillors countrywide were not happy.

Mr Chisenga assured councillors that the issue was being addressed and receiving the attention it deserved.

He called on the councillors to exercise patience as Government was attending to their plight.

“What I want to say is that I am with the councillors on this matter and understand that the K700 is not enough but we have voiced out our word. Let us give room to receive feedback from Government on the matter,” he said.

And officiating at the workshop, Copperbelt Province permanent secretary, Reverend Howard Sikwela, said that Government expected good rapport between councillors and council officers.

Rev. Sikwela sounded the warning against illegal land dealings which he said had become a source of income for some civic leaders and officers.

He said Government’s position was zero tolerance on corruption and that there were no sacred cows.

He emphasised that councillors were elected into office charged with immense and cardinal responsibilities critical for successful performance of Government. Rev. Sikwela said the role of service provision was expected to be discharged competently, objectively and maintained in highest esteem.

He said Government attached great importance to the local authorities, hence the decision to orient them with objective service provision.
