FORMER TAZARA WORKERS PROTEST OVER UNPAID PERKS

By FLAVOUR KANUNGO

FORMER Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) workers yesterday stormed the Ministry of Transport and Communication offices in Lusaka demanding US$40, 000 balance from their terminal benefits.

The workers represented by Mr Alex Mubili have alleged that Government underpaid them their benefits in 2016 by failing to convert their funds into dollars.

The workers who worked under intestate in Dar es Salaam and Mbeya explained that their benefits were supposed to be paid either in Tanzanian shilling or US dollar but that Government paid them in Kwacha which resulted in an underpayment.

Mr Mubili said Government has not attended to any of their complaints since 2016 and that they were almost becoming destitute.

He said two of their colleagues have died while one is in a critical condition as he has no money to buy medicines.

The (eighteight) 88 former workers have since appealed to the government to pay them their balance at the current rate of the dollar to the Kwacha.

When contacted, Ministry of Transport and Communication acting Permanent Secretary Stephen Mbewe said he was not aware of their plight.
