By AARON CHIYANZO in Kawambwa

ZAMBIANS are assured of economic prosperity and food security with increased agricultural production in the country coupled with the use of technology and scientific methods, President Edgar Lungu has said.

President Lungu also said Zambia was poised to become the food hub for the region and the entire Africa.

The Head of State said this when he toured the Green 2000 and launched the harvest of a total of over 2000 metric tonnes of maize and Soya Beans  in Kawambwa yesterday.

He expressed happiness that the project, an initiative of some Israeli investors involved the participation of local communities including pupils.

The President said the project would be duplicated in Muchinga and other provinces.

President Lungu said the idea was embraced following his visit to Israel a few years ago where the Israeli investors were invited to invest in Zambia.

He said with the conducive weather conditions the country was enjoying there was no reason for Zambians to starve.

President Lungu assured the nation of economic prosperity with increased agricultural production.

“There should be no reason for Zambians to starve. All we need to do is work extra hard,” he said.

And project general manager, David Durandt said the communities in surrounding areas were being supported through the project.

Mr Durandt said the project also targeted to empower about 2000 farmers.

The multi-million dollar Green 2000 Agriculture project in Kawambwa District of Luapula Province had created 150 direct jobs.
