By KETRA KALUNGA

POLICE will enforce the law as applicable to ensure there is law and order.

Police deputy spokesperson, Danny Mwale said the law of the Zambia police service just like other security agencies is to enforce the law to ensure that there is law and order in the country.

Mr Mwale was reacting to the suspension of political rallies by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and the defiance from some opposition parties.

Meanwhile, Wright Musoma of the Zambia Republican Party (ZRP)  says it is ignorance on the part of the United Party For National Development (UPND) and its alliance to say that they find the cancellation of Political rallies by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), illegal because the commission is in charge of elections.

The ECZ has suspended political rallies due to a surge in Covid-19 cases ahead of the August 12 elections as recommended by the ministry of Health technical working group.

But the UPND alliance said it finds the cancellation of public rallies illegal, irrational, partisan, and flawed at both logic and Law.

Mr. Musoma   however said as an elections body, the ECZ acted within the law and was mandated to even cancel the elections if the need arose.

He said the decision by the ECZ to counsel political rallies was not aimed at disadvantaging any political party because the ban extends to all political parties including the Patriotic Front (PF).

Mr. Musoma said it is sad that what matters for the UPND alliance is for Hakainde Hichilema to be in State House at the expense of people being infected with the deadly virus.

“The UPND and its alliance should know that the people of Zambia are not supposed to die for them, if Hakainde Hichilema really loves the Zambian people then he should not find problems with ECZ cancelling  political rallies,” he said.

Mr. Musoma wondered why the UPND alliance is shaken by the cancellation of political rallies when the PF which he said commands a huge following, is not worried.

He urged the UPND alliance to emulate the PF and President Lungu for having shown leadership on the matter by prioritizing the lives of Zambians.

And Mr. Musoma has urged the Zambia police to be alert and arrest any political party that would defy the suspension of public rallies in the wake of a surge in COVID-19 cases being recorded in the country.
