ONE vehicle was stoned during a fracas in Luyando area of Nkana constituency on Wednesday evening when a group suspected to be from the Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Alexander Chiteme allegedly attacked the house of Luyando chairman Howard Mweema whom they perceived to be a supporter to Independent candidate Binwell Mpundu
Mr Mpundu confirmed the incident on social media, while former Nkana Member of Parliament Alexander Chiteme’s phone went unanswered
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Elias Chushi said he had received the report regarding the incident in Nkana constituency where a vehicle was stoned and was actually on his way to get the details on the ground
Mr Chushi said he received the report from both Mr Mpundu and Mr Chiteme, a situation which had prompted him to travel to Kitwe to establish the truth
“Yes, I received a report of violence in Nkana constituency where a vehicle was stoned and I’m actually on my way to Kitwe. I got the report from both Mr Mpundu and Mr Chiteme,” Mr Chushi said
And in his posting on social media, Mr Mpundu said Mr Mweema’s house was attacked by very well known people from Mr Chiteme’s camp and that the incident was extremely unfortunate and very provocative
“They had gone to beat up Mr Mweema at his house, but they did not find him because he had gone to attend a funeral of his father. So they attacked his children,” he said
Mr Mpundu, however said his team will not go down the route of violence because it was there to find solutions to the challenges of the people of Nkana constituency
“The attack on the Luyando community Chairman last evening by very well known people from our rival camp is extremely unfortunate and very provocative, but our team will not go down the route of violence because we are here to find solutions to the challenges of the people of Nkana.
“I trust the police will deal with the culprits decisively and perhaps deal with the one sending them.
It’s appalling to have the young and so called educated politicians resorting to violence instead of issue based politics,”Mr Mpundu said
Mr Mpundu urged his supporters to refrain from violence because they were peace makers but stressed that avoiding physical violence did not mean they were cowards but that they did not believe in such ancient ways of doing politics.
“My appeal to politicians in Nkana is when your time is up please pack and leave and allow a few to clap for you unlike destroying the constituency that had so much peace when you were coming seeking support.
