SCHOOLS SHOULD CLOSE TWICE A YEAR SAYS THE ZAMBIA NATIONAL UNION OF TEACHERS

SCHOOLS SHOULD CLOSE TWICE A YEAR- ZNUT

By SANFROSSA MANYINDA

THE Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) has called for change of the school calendar due to the high number of teach- ers dying of Covid-19.

ZNUT Copperbelt pro- vincial chairman, David Siamutwa, said it was dis- heartening to see the coun- try losing many teachers due to Covid-19, hence the need to revise the school calandar.

He suggested that schools could probably be closing twice a year such that the teachers and pu- pils are away in the cold- est seasons when cases of Covid-19 go up.

Mr Siamutwa said there was a high death rate among teachers and that the union was receiving news about teachers dying nearly every day.

“We have received so many death notices amongst our members and our teachers and it is for this reason we feel the need to protect the few teachers who are still alive. Therefore, schools should close twice a year when the weather is cold,” he said.

Mr Siamutwa has appealed to the government to consider changing the school calendar to suit the prevailing condition.

He proposed that the Ministry of General Edu- cation considers adjust- ing the school calendar of the country to take into account the season when Covid-19 cases are most prevalent.
