THE clergy has welcomed the call by President Edgar Lungu to constitute a commission of enquiry on the privatisation of state assets.
President Lungu during a visit on the Copperbelt, said UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema had an insatiable appetite to sell the country to foreigners and that he would not go scotfree once he bounced back.
The Head of State said time had come for the UPND leader to pay for benefitting in the messy privatisation exercise in which he amassed too much wealth.
In supporting the President, Independent Churches of Zambia president Bishop David Masupa said it was high time that the matter was dealt with so that Zambians could know the truth.
Bishop Masupa said that most Zambians were in the dark over the matter and he hoped the commission would be done transparently so that no one was unfairly treated.
“The gesture by the president should be commended by all Zambians because it will help the country know what transpired and if possible bring the culprits to book,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bishop Masupa challenged the ECZ to come up with clear guidelines on how much people should lobby for funds.
He said by enshrining it in the code of conduct, individuals would be able to know their limits unlike what was transpiring at the moment.
Bishop Masupa said that it was unfortunate that the UPND leader promised to hand over the mines after they gave him US$300, 000 for campaigns.
He said that it would be unfortunate if the mines were given back to Vedanta Resources because it almost jeopardised the lives of thousands of miners.
