Improve criminal justice, govt urged

By KETRA KALUNGA
The UPND led-government should improve the criminal justice by ensuring that those who commit petty offences serve community sentences, says the Prison Re-Integration and Empowerment Organisation.

Executive director, Derrick Malumo said refining the criminal justice would help decongest the correctional facilities because not all crimes should end up in prison.
Mr. Malumo said in an interview that the newly elected government should improve the conditions of inmates especially that

they were stakeholders in the just ended elections having voted for the first time.
He said the UPND should put in place policies that recognises inmates as human beings and protect their rights.

“Inmates voted because they wanted to see change, so we advocate that the new government works on the rights of inmates,” he said.
Mr. Malumo said by virtue of being inmates, they are already incarcerated or serving for the crimes they committed hence the need to improve their welfare and uphold their rights as human beings.
