THERE is a likelihood that Zesco installations were sabotaged by the opposition mercenaries which led to a countrywide blackout on Sunday and therefore the need to institute an investigation and increase security on all sensitive infrasctracture as the country votes tomorrow, PF member Chris Changwereza has said.

On Sunday unknown people brought down a 330kV transmission line in Kabwe in an act suspected to be clear sabotage, a possible cause of the widespread power blackout the country experienced.

Mr Changwereza said in an interview that Government should institute an investigation to find out how the country was blackout few days to the general election.

He said there is need to identify culprits behind the sabotage on the power installations in order to safeguard the economy.

Mr Changwereza said this is not the first time such a suspicious thing is happening adding that not a long time ago, some unknown people believed to be linked to a named opposition party, carried out several sabotage missions on Zesco power lines with a view of paralyzing the country and later blame it on the PF Government.

“As citizens, we all know that the country has over the last few months witnessed possible acts of sabotage and violence by a named opposition party in the run up to the August 12 general elections, and therefore one will not be wrong to conclude that   even the blackout that affected the country a few days ago, is work of the opposition,” he said.

Mr Changwereza said the PF Government under the good stewardship of President Edgar Lungu has in the few years of being in power worked tirelessly to end load shedding by constructing and commissioning power generation projects, that has led to the country to have uninterrupted power supply, but that this has not sat well with the opposition especially the UPND.

He also suggested that Zesco should consider introducing security technology that would enable the utility company to monitor activities on all major power transmission lines, to prevent further sabotage to the installations.
