KALABA CAUTIONS HH

By ADRIAN MWANZA

IT is highly suspicious and not the job of the President to make revelations of recovered looted assets by the investigative wings because it will make the move political, Democratic Party president, Harry Kalaba has said

Mr Kalaba was reacting to revelations by President Hakainde Hichilema that Government would this week announce the first batch of recovered assets from individuals serving in the previous regime.

The President said that the process was not aimed at injuring anyone but to give back the people what belonged to them.

Mr Kalaba however said that it did not augur very well for the Head of State to make such pronouncements because it would send a picture that he had a political finger in the process.

He said that the fight may be genuine but people may misconstrue the information because it may seem as a political witch-hunt.

“The investigative wings should be left to do their jobs diligently and not seem to be controlled by higher powers when executing their duties,” he said.

Mr Kalaba said going forward, the President should try by all means to stay away from such things because he would be creating a wrong impression.

He said President Hichilema’s interest should be in fixing the economy and not involving himself in the operations of the investigative wings.

“The President’s focus should be on what measures he is going to put in place to ensure that the economy is fixed and made viable,’’ he said.

Mr Kalaba said that the investigative wings had competent people that could handle their duties properly and hence the need to let them do their job.

He said it was wrong for the head of State to take that stance and that people would have doubts on the sincerity of the investigations being conducted.
