TEACHERS DEMAND SALARY HIKE

By KETRA KALUNGA
The Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) has written to the government demanding reasonable perks for teachers to mitigate the many challenges they face due to the high cost of living.

ZNUT general secretary Newman Bubala disclosed in an interview that the union has written to the government negotiations to review the salaries of teachers
Mr. Bubala said the negotiations would include salary increments and allowances among other conditions of service.

“We are expecting negotiations to start with the government, we have written to them and we are just waiting for a response,” he said.

He said the negotiations would be centered on reviewing salary increments to a level where the teachers would be able to tackle the many challenges they encounter in the execution of their duties.

Mr. Bubala said the union was ready to bargain for better salaries in view of the current living conditions following this year’s collective agreement which ends in December.

“We go through these negotiations to adjust to the high cost of living, to be up to date with what is happening, so we hope and pray that the negotiations will commence soon,” he said.
