Eagles tame Buffaloes in thriller

By MICHAEL MIYOBA

GREEN Buffaloes unbeaten run in the MTN/FAZ Super League came to an end after visiting Choma’s Independence Stadium where they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Green Eagles.

A brace from striker Derrick Bulaya ended Buffaloe’s perfect start which saw them win eight games and four draws from the first 12 games.

Bulaya broke the deadlock in the 21st minute and had to wait for the second half to complete his brace to ensure victory for Eagles

Victory propelled Eagles to third on the Super League table with 20 points, two points behind second-placed Nkwazi FC.

Eagles are also eight points behind Buffaloes who missed a chance to open a nine-poins lead at the summit of the Super League table.

Meanwhile, Zesco United bounced back to winning ways after overcoming Buildcon 3-2 in a five-goal thriller at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

After struggling with three draws and one defeat in the last four games, Zesco put up a spirited fight to get the win which provided coach NumbaMumamba relief in his quest to defend the Super League title.

Kelvin Kampamba, Mkandawire and Chitiya Mususu  got the goals for the Ndola giants who had dominated both halvess in the Ndola derby.

Kampamba broke the deadlock 17 minutes from a sublime free kick out outside the 18-yard box.

Enock Sakala almost grabbed Zesco’s second goal with a powerful long range shot which went over the bar in the 24th minute.

Samson Mkandawire doubled Zesco’s lead with a powerful drive three minutes before the half hour mark.

Zesco were awarded a penalty after Kampamba was brought down by Weta Boleke but defender Adrian Chama failed to convert from the spot as the first half ended 2-0 in favour of “Team Yaziko.”

Buildcon FC came close to reducing the deficit in the 46th minute when Kezron Kizito unlocked a thunderous shot that was parried away by Ian Otieno.

Buildon finally pulled one goal back through striker Brian Mwila who scored a penalty won in the 70th minute.

The defending champions restored their two-goal lead through Mususuwho made the game beyond reach for Buildcon with a late goal to make it 3-1.

However Patrick Ngoma scored in the first minute of added time to give Buildcon some hope before referee Derick Kafulu blew the last whistle.  Zesco moved to sixth on the Super League table with 18 points.
