Be prepared for droughts, looming hunger-SAFADA

By GIDEON NYENDWA GOVERNMENT should start preparing to handle the hunger that will result from the drought being experienced in the country, Small-Scale Farmers Development Agency (SAFADA) Executive Director Boyd Moobwe has said.Mr Moobwe said the dry spell the country was experiencing was worrying because it had a direct threat on the country’s food security. He said it was important for the government to start preparing in advance on what could be done to help the farmers in this situation.Mr Moobwe said that the only solution to the problem that the country was about to face was winter maize. He said that maize could still be grown from now up to October if proper mechanisms were put in place by empowering farmers with early maturing seeds and equipment for irrigation.Mr Moobwe said that the climate was changing and what the country has experienced this year was a warning that Zambia needs to start embracing irrigation.
