LEVY MWANAWASA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS DEMAND MANAGEMENT’S RESIGNATION

By KALOBWE BWALYA

WE shall not rest until Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Elwyn Chomba resigns or else we shall drag her out of the office.

The students are also demanding the entire management at the university be dropped to be replaced by a new team. On Friday, students at LMMU protested and called on Prof.

Chomba and the entire top management to resign, accusing them of having brought confusion at the institution. In an interview, LMMU student president Lucky Mwenya complained of delays to publish results for two months because of failure to pay the lecturers on time.

Mr Mwenya said students have given a one-week ultimatum to Prof. Chomba and the management to surrender their positions failure to which they will be removed by force. “It is shocking that LMMU have not paid the lecturers on time which has also led to them refusing to release the results. We are pleading for the LMMU to quickly pay them so that the results can be released to students,” said Mr Mwenya.

Mr Martin Mbewe, a second-year medical student, said lecturers have refused to release the results until they are paid their allowances. Another student, Choongwe Mulewa said Prof. Chomba should just resign because she has failed to run the institution, accusing her of poor leadership.

And Prof Chomba has however accused lecturers of being behind the protest. She said she was not moved by the students’ demands at all because the management are carrying out their work in a professional manner.
