Sampa urges govt to invoke Liquor Licencing Act

By NAMO PHIRI

Government  should invoke the 2011 Liquor Licencing Act to ban bars operating near hospitals, schools and   churches, former Resident Doctors Association of Zambia President Brian Sampa has charged.

Dr Sampa says the Act clearly stipulates that no bar will be allowed to operate from the three areas.

Dr Sampa says from the time the Act was enacted, it has never been enforced which is a source of concern.

In an interview, he says there is need to ensure that the Act is enforced so that sanity can prevail in the restricted areas.

Dr Sampa said  it has been observed that bars have been operating especially at universities and colleges, and near church buildings which is against the law.

Dr Sampa says he has since written to the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development to ensure that the Act is enforced so that no illegalities are allowed at the near the said areas.

Meanwhile Dr Sampa says the Ban Alcohol Campaign has been welcomed by many Zambians.

He says Zambians they have realised that banning the alcohol will save many lives because many lives have been lost.

He says so far 75 percent of the campaign has been achieved.

Dr Sampa says 50 percent has been achieved through the dissemination of information and 25 percent has been achieved through Zambians accepting the message.
