Guard against polio, parents urged

By MILLENIUM REPORTER
THE Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) says there is need for parents, guardians and all stakeholders to ensure that children are protected from contracting the new polio virus that has been detected in some sewer ponds.
Last week, the Minister of Health, Ms Sylvia Masebo announced that Zambia has recorded a confirmed isolated case of polio virus from a sewer pond in Kitwe following the national surveillance system led by the Zambia National Public Health Institute.
ZMA Public Relations Officer Dalal Naeem said hygienic measures should be strictly followed following the detection of the new virus.
He said communities should also be sensitised on various diseases that are spread through lack of proper hygiene such as cholera among others now that the rains have started.
Mr. Naeem also said Malawi among other countries has been hit with the cholera virus, polio virus among other transmitted viruses adding that Zambia should ensure to uphold the health measure to avoid the virus from spreading.
