Technocrats scared of politicians, fear of losing their jobs

Southern African Institute for Policy and Research has noted with concern that issues of politicians having power has led to the technocrats siding with the wrong side of the law due to fear for their jobs.

Institute Senior Research Fellow Caeser Cheelo says technocrats must be able to advise politicians without fear or favour for purposes of development.

Mr Cheelo said it would not be fair for technocrats to spend years and resources acquiring knowledge only to fear for their jobs because of the influence from politicians.

He said there is need to improve the security of tenure so that a Permanent Secretary or any other technocrat does not authorize wrong things at the instruction of the minister.
