President Hakainde Hichilema says he is impressed with the US$100 million crop production initiative by Zambeef Plc aimed at increasing crop production and food security in the country.

President Hichilema made the observation when he toured the expanded agro facilities at Zambeef Mpongwe farms.

Mr Hichilema took time to inspect the wheat bunkers holding the harvest wheat and silos under construction.

The Head of State also inspected the flour mill under construction when he launched the first harvest of the Zambeef Wheat at Mpongwe Farms in Mpongwe District, on the Copperbelt province.

the Zambeef Wheat Harvest is part of a $100 million expansion project into crop production.

The investment has seen Zambeef venture into Wheat, Maize and Soybeans farming in order to increase crop production and ensure food security amidst rising global food prices.

President Hichilema launched the first harvest of the expanded crop production of the Zambeef Wheat project, cultivated on over 3,000 hectares of land.

And President Hichilema boarded a 15 tonne combine harvester and was taken round part of the field as the wheat was harvested.

The investment is expected to add value to Zambeef’s agro feed and retail operations.

Meanwhile, construction is ongoing of a flour mill along with over 100 metric tonnes silos for storage of wheat and flour.

The investment is expected to increase crop production, boost national food security and enhance job creation through value addition.

President Hichilema’s delegation comprised Minister of Agriculture Mtolo Phiri, Minister of Information and Media Cornelius Mweetwa, Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo, Presidential Policy Advisor Chipokota Mwanawasa, who is also Deputy Head of Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) and Ministry of Information and Media Director Spokesperson Henry Kapata.

Eight traditional leaders from Mpongwe and other surrounding districts of Copperbelt Province were also in attendance. – Zanis
