ZAMBIA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ZTE the Chinese leading global Information Communication Technology (ICT) that will see the setting up of a smart phone manufacturing assembly plant in Zambia.

In his message on his official facebook page, President Hakainde Hichilema announced that Zambia is working towards developing a stronger e-commerce and government platforms, Zambia has undertaken to attract investment into manufacturing smart phones and was therefore encouraging ZTE to set up its assembly plant in the country President Hichilema said he was of a strong belief that MoU with ZTE would be a flagship project in Zambia that would bring many jobs as his government was working at creating increased digital solutions to Zambians through the E-government Division.
“Our last engagement in Shenzhen City this morning was with ZTE, a leading global ICT solutions provider. We signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to set up a smartphone assembly plant in Zambia. As we work towards developing stronger e-commerce and e-government platforms we want to ensure that all citizens can afford smartphone devices to access government services online,” President Hichilema said.
President Hichilema yesterday left Shenzhen City for Jingganshan in the Province of Jiangxi, where his attention is tourism and investment.
And President Hichilema on his third day of his State visit to China yesterday began with a visit to the headquarters of internet services giant, Tencent, in Shenzhen.
The head of State called on Tencent to consider the opportunities for digital platforms in Zambia as his government was aggressively transforming the country into a modern economy through technological advancement.
“To leverage on the opportunities for our youth presented by the unprecedented speed of technological advancements, our curriculum should be more skills-based than theory. Tech is among the growth industries where quality jobs will be created,” President Hichilema said.
