Nalumango wants COMESA economies improved

VICE President Mutale Nalumango says there is need for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) member states to channel energies in areas that will enhance economic development.

Ms Nalumango said it is important to leverage on the opportunities offered under the COMESA -EAC -SADC Tripartite so as to eradicate poverty in the COMESA region.  

She was speaking during the 44th meeting of COMESA Council of Ministers in Lusaka yesterday.

Ms Nalumango said utilising the opportunities will enable to improve the wellbeing of the people in the COMESA region. 

She said enhancing productivity will generate employment opportunities which will increase household income earnings therefore eradicating poverty in the region.

She said it is important that the member states focus on issues that are critical to the development of the region.

Meanwhile, COMESA Secretary General Chileshe Kapwepwe said, there is need to mobilise resources through Public Private Partnership (PPP) as public funding is not adequate to bridge the infrastructure gap.

Ms Kapwepwe said that inadequate infrastructure in the region remains one of the major constraints to economic growth and development.
