SOME people in Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have continued to engage in activities inimical to the interests of both countries, a Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has noted.
The Zambia-Democratic Republic of Congo Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has noted that the threat of terrorism as well as increased transnational crimes had the potential to undermine not only the security of the two countries but also the realisation of a common vision.
The 13th session of the Zambia-DRC Joint Permanent Commission was held in Kitwe from November 4 – 8, 2024 and Ambrose Lufuma the Defence Minister led the Zambian delegation while Shabani Jacquemain represented the DRC delegation.
This is according to a statement issued yesterday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Further, the commission noted with concern that instability in the eastern DRC and other regions had persisted.
“The commission, therefore, reiterated the call for peace and commended the ongoing efforts aimed at restoring stability to these areas,” the statement read in part.
It devised new strategies and frameworks to curb vices, such as smuggling, on one hand, and promote common interests, on the other hand.
It was agreed that the resolutions of the commission should be timely implemented to sustain the milestones achieved over the years. The commission commended defence and security wings, as well as other line institutions, for successfully collaborating and conducting security operations to counter perpetrators of various crimes.
