ZAMMSA Scandal!

The ongoing turmoil at the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Authority (ZAMMSA) reveals the deeply rooted corruption that has become a blight on our public service.
The recent crash of ZAMMSA’s critical server, amidst investigations into procurement irregularities, including a dubious US$65 million shipment of medicines from Egypt, raises serious concerns about accountability and transparency in the management of our nation’s health resources.
It is inconceivable that in a country grappling with healthcare challenges, vital medical supplies would be left stranded and unpaid for, while millions of dollars are at stake.
This saga not only points to gross mismanagement but suggests deliberate tampering and potential sabotage aimed at concealing evidence of corrupt practices.
The fact that the crashed server hosted sensitive financial and payroll data, which may have been tampered with, should alarm the public and warrant immediate action by law enforcement agencies.
The suspension of ZAMMSA’s Director General, Victor Nyasulu, is a start, but it is far from enough.
The allegations that he is merely a scapegoat for more powerful individuals cannot be dismissed lightly.
The investigations must go beyond surface-level responses and target the systemic corruption that has allowed such a scandal to occur.
We call upon the government, particularly the Anti-Corruption Commission, to conduct a comprehensive probe that spares no one, regardless of rank or political affiliation.
Furthermore, the ongoing forensic audit by the Auditor General and PriceWaterhouseCoopers should be expedited.
The Zambian people deserve answers, and the findings must be made public to restore some semblance of trust in our institutions. Any attempts to interfere with these processes would only confirm the worst fears of a cover-up.
We commend the Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) for stepping in to investigate the server crash.
However, this incident also highlights the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures in our public institutions to protect critical data from potential sabotage.
This scandal serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of corruption on our country’s healthcare system. When officials prioritize self-interest over public welfare, it is the ordinary Zambians who suffer most. We urge the government to take decisive action to hold those responsible accountable and to implement reforms that will prevent such malfeasance in the future.
The people of Zambia are watching closely. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done if we are to rebuild public confidence in our health institutions and safeguard the integrity of our nation’s governance.
