POLICE in Lusaka are investingating a tragic incident in which a two-year-old boy was mauled to death by four dogs in the New Kasama residential area.
The incident occurred on May 23, 2025, around 11:00 hours and was reported to police by retired Colonel Webster Simwanda, 59, the owner of the dogs.
According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service assistant public relations officer, Godfrey Chilabi, the toddler has been identified as Prosper Hamaleya, son of Gift Hamaleya, a caretaker residing at a neighbouring property.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Col. Simwanda left his premises around 06:00 hours, leaving the four dogs unsecured and the main gate unlocked.
It was during this time that Prosper and his elder sister, aged four, reportedly opened the gate and entered the yard in search of water.
“Upon entering the premises, the dogs attacked and mauled the child, inflicting multiple deep cuts across his body,” Mr Chilabi stated.
“The child was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.”
The body has since been deposited in the UTH mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
Mr Chilabi confirmed that Col. Simwanda is in police custody as investigations into possible charges of manslaughter and reckless or negligent acts are underway.
Additionally, the Lusaka City Council has been engaged to assist in securing the dogs involved in the fatal attack, as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The Zambia Police Service has since issued a strong reminder to all dog owners to properly secure their pets and ensure public safety to prevent similar tragedies.
