THE Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved 45 energy licences and 10 construction permits across the country’s petroleum, electricity, and renewable energy sub-sectors, with total investment pledges amounting to K1.36 billion (approximately US$49 million).

ERB Manager of Public Relations Namukolo Kasumpa said the approvals were granted during the ERB Licensing Committee meeting on May 16 and reflect growing investor confidence in the energy sector.

She said the move also underscores the ERB’s ongoing efforts to streamline regulatory processes and create a business-friendly environment that supports efficient application reviews and project execution.

Ms Kasumpa said the licences span a wide range of energy-related activities, including the generation of renewable energy, distribution, import and export of petroleum products, retail of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), lubricant operations, and electricity trading.

“These initiatives aim to boost energy availability, enhance operational efficiency, and improve access to modern energy services nationwide,” she said.

She said among the 10 construction permits approved, a major highlight was Phase 2 of a 100 MWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant in Chiel Mailo’s area of Kanona in Serenje.

Ms Kasumpa said the project, which would be developed in four phases of 25 MWp each, carries an investment value of $27.5 million.

She said to support petroleum logistics and infrastructure development, the ERB has also licensed 114 road tank vehicles and authorised the operation of three newly constructed service stations.

Ms Kasumpa reiterated the ERB’s commitment to regulating the energy sector effectively while promoting a sustainable, reliable, and inclusive energy mix for the nation.
