North-Western records over 500 motorbike accidents in one year

POLICE in North-Western Province have recorded over 500 road traffic accidents involving motorbikes between June 2024 and June 2025.
North- Western Province Traffic Police Officer, Tanezio Phiri, noted with concern the recklessness of riders when carrying out their routine transportation activities.
Mr Phiri said the majority of the riders have a tendency of overloading passengers, which he said is against the road traffic regulations.
He said overloading exposes passengers and riders at high risk.
He said motorbikes have become the fastest mode of transportation that is convenient and easily accessible and as such, there was a need for constant engagements with the riders on maintaining safety and observing traffic regulations.
“There has been an increase of motorbikes across the province and this has significantly improved the transportation business. However, this development has come with its repercussions and calls for concerted efforts to curb the increasing cases of road accidents involving motorbikes,” Mr Phiri said.
Mr Phiri also urged riders to exercise patience on the roads and ensure they make use of personal protective equipment such as helmets and reflective vests among others.
He also called on the North Western Province Motorbikes Association to hold regular sensitisation meetings with riders on road safety and courtesy, as well as use of protective wear.
“Government remains committed to ensuring all road users adhere to traffic regulations and anyone found violating rules will be dealt with according to the law,” Mr Phiri said.
Out of the total accidents recorded, 65 were fatal with 110 deaths comprising riders and pedestrians, 257 people were seriously injured and received treatment and discharged while some are admitted in hospitals. – ZANIS.
