IT is upcoming Choma-based artist Smack B’s hope that his music will change the attitude of the Zambian people towards people living with HIV/AIDS.
Smack B, born Christopher Imasiku has pledged his career to fight the scorns of the HIV pandemic and ensure that people living with the virus were not stigmatised.
His music career has, however, not been an easy one as he also had to face the hurdles of making it on the Zambian music scene.
The 19-year-old ambitious musician started his career when he was in Grade nine at Macha Mission School in Southern Province.
He was chosen as an entertainment prefect at Macha Mission School shortly after forming a group called Cash Zone Swag with his childhood friends.
“I started music when I was at school because I used to follow Mark 2 and Choma-based known artist Real Jay. I used to say to my friends that one day, I will be like them and they used to laugh at me. “While in Grade nine, I was chosen entertainment prefect shortly after forming a singing group with my friends,” said Smack B.
Smack B explained that it was at this stage that the group decided that their music career would be dedicated to fighting the evils against people living with HIV/AIDS. “In the same year, we recorded a song titled ‘chetu chavwage’, even though it was a flop. This was our first time to be in the studio,” he said.
The group split up shortly after the Grade nine examinations which saw the other members go to boarding schools, Smack B, now all alone was left with a burning passion to soldier on.
After a year of struggling to get himself heard as a solo artiste, Smack B met a well-established Choma-based producer and rapper Smack Jay, who signed him on label and promoted his music on major radio stations across the country.
Known by his popular song ‘Mwanisiya Neka’, Smack B is back in the studios working on his album, with some more songs which will help sensitise the
nation on HIV/AIDS.
