THE rise in theft and burglary cases reported in Solwezi has raised grave concern among residents, with the police announcing that they have arrested the notorious burglary suspect on the police most wanted list.
North-Western commissioner of police Auxensio Daka said break-ins and thefts have continued especially with Golf Estates, Trident College and Kansanshi Old Village being the most affected.
He said the crimes were mostly committed in the night when owners of the houses were either sleeping or out on duty.
“But we have also recorded cases during the day, especially in the Golf Estates, at the mines where thefts are committed during the day.
“As you know some of the houses are occupied by single people and they go for work during the day and there is nobody at home, and that’s the time criminals strike,” Mr Daka said.
He disclosed that Solwezi district was recording up to about 10 cases of thefts per week.
“This is a very high rate and we are continuing to investigate and ensure that the situation is controlled,” he said.
Mr Daka has since appealed to members of the public to be alert and report any suspects to police.
Some of the items that were recovered by police include three 42’’ iLG television sets, two laptops, two travelling bags, three safes, a fridge and one home theatre, among others.
And police say they have arrested the notorious criminal that has been organizing thefts in the district.
The suspect, identified as Himcliff Mainda, 24, of Zambia compound, is currently facing a number of burglary and theft charges.
