By MUKOSELA KASALWE, in Kasama

CHISHIMBA Falls, in the Northern Province is a marvel of untapped potential, which should attract as many tourists as the Victoria Falls and that this was the opportune time for visiting the area, says Kasama Central Member of Parliament, Kelvin Sampa.

Mr. Sampa said the Chishimba Falls was unique in its own way as it had huge land mass and its view was spectacular as people could have a closer look at the waterfalls.

The lawmaker who toured the Falls on Sunday which is in his Constituency was informed by management that the number of tourists had continued to increase since 2016 and that with the long weekend it was expected that more foreign and local tourists would visit the tourist attraction.

Mr. Sampa said most foreign and local tourists knew about the Victoria Falls in Livingstone but only a few knew or visited the magnificent Chishimba Falls.

He expressed confidence that with the airport in the district more tourists would find it easy to fly in and visit the fall.

“Most people only know and visit the Victoria Falls while the country has abundant and spectacular waterfalls such as this Chishimba Falls which is iconic and special in its own way.

“Tourists get to have a closer feel of it and the time is right that more foreign and local tourists visit this place” he said.

He said Northern Province was endowed with several waterfalls and that Lumangwe Falls was even more spectacular with a height of 30 to 40 metres and a width of 130 metres.

Mr. Sampa said he was happy with the increased inflow of tourists and entry fee collection which is K8 per person but was quick to point out the need for more tourist guides.

Mr. Sampa said it was necessary to have adequate accommodation so that tourists could spend nights there and have a feel of the environment.

The parliamentarian said Government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu had prioritised tourism as a key sector which had a huge potential to contribute to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

He said with proper infrastructure in place the country’s tourism and art sector was heading in the right direction.

Mr. Sampa interacted with local tourists who included students from Lusaka’s Evelyn Hone College and Kasama residents whom he found time to take photos with, much to their excitement.
