BY NATION REPORTER

THE UPND has instructed its provincial chairpersons to receive submissions from individuals that might have been victimized by Police officers prior to the August 12 General Elections which saw them being ushered into government.

Through  an internal memorandum, Party Secretary General Batuke Imenda has directed all provincial heads of the party to compile lists of such individuals that might have had a falling out with the police for them to bring closure to such matters.

Mr Imenda indicated that the party had received numerous submissions and complaints from families of citizens that were detained largely for being members of the opposition parties when the PF was  in power.

He said that time had come to bring closure to such matters for citizens because people were unfairly detained for fighting for a better Zambia.

“You are now directed to compile lists of such members on the following format, Full names, NRC, Date detained, Police Station held at and arresting officer in charge,’’ the letter said.

Mr Imenda said that this was aimed at ensuring that people received justice for fighting for the truth.

Meanwhile Democratic Party (DP) President Harry Kalaba said that Mr Imenda was not even in government for him to make such statements.

He said this was how the fight against corruption was weakened because it was an indication that people had other ulterior motives.

“Why is Mr Imenda doing that? he is not even in government structures therefore does not have any powers, let’s not cheapen the fight against corruption in the country by bringing in politics but rather deal with the matter professionally,’’ he said.

And New Congress Party (NCP) President Peter Chanda said that the move was clear that it was a witch hunt.

Mr Chanda said that the new dawn government needed to take a leaf from the late South African President Nelson Mandela who forgave the people that imprisoned him for over 20 years.

“It’s things like these that will make the UPND lose grip because people voted them in office to fix the economy and not people,” Mr Chanda said.
