THE Cotton Board of Zambia says cotton can play a significant role in employment creation and elevate the status of the country in earning foreign exchange if the congruency of ideas from stakeholders are put into practice through reforms in the sectors.

Speaking at the 2023 National Cotton Conference in Lusaka yesterday, Cotton Board of Zambia chairperson Raymond Mpundu said 2024 is going to be a year of action were players in the sector must do less talking and start implementing and produce results.
Mr Mpundu said the Cotton Board will play a significant role in making sure make that various discussions that took place in 2023 will begin to bear fruits next year and take the cotton business to a different level.
And Ministry of Commerce and Industry chief economist in charge of industry, Trust Mfune said the government will continue to provide policy to ensure that the cotton industry grows.
Mr Mfune said the cotton sector is a priority sector and the government attached great importance to it.
He said the sector is labour intensive and if sustained it would play a significant role solving unemployment problems that the country has been struggling with.
“As government we are determined to provide policy that will ensure that the cotton industry grows and succeeds,” Mr Mfune said.
Meanwhile, Solidaridad Southern Africa managing director Shungu Kanyenmba said there was need to change the lives of smallholder cotton famers to make them sustainable amid the current climate change that is affecting everyone.
