‘Enforce laws on employment of persons with intellectual disabilities’ By SENIYA BANDA THE Zambia Association of Employment for Persons with Disabilities has called for stronger enforcement of laws requiring organisations to employ persons with intellectual disabilities. Association Executive Director Patience Nyambe says despite the country having laws to protect persons with disabilities, many people with intellectual disabilities are still rejected by employers because of their condition. Ms Nyambe explained that intellectual disability refers to a condition where a person’s intellectual ability develops more slowly, but said that with proper skills training, most are able to work. She expressed concern that although her organisation has trained more than 800 individuals with intellectual disabilities in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Technology, only a small number have been integrated into the workforce. Ms. Nyambe says the association, which has operated for over 25 years, works with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Special Education to identify individuals with intellectual disabilities and equip them with skills for employment.
