MINING companies should suspend all biometric systems in the industry as a COVID-19 preventive measure, the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has said.
MUZ President Joseph Chewe also urged mining companies and all workers to strictly adhere stipulated measures of reducing the spread of the pandemic.
He urged the workers in the Zambian mining industry to ensure social distancing, hand washing, sanitising and self-quarantining measures for those suspected of having the virus.
This is contained in a statement issued to the Daily Nation in Kitwe yesterday.
“We want to also commend mining companies and mine workers on their effort to put in place safety requirements like hand washing points and sanitizers in mining sites and also on the removal of the mandatory Breathalyzers systems.
“The union will continue to closely monitor all mining companies to ensure that they do not lag behind in regards to safety measures and also to ensure that no worker loses employment during this period,’’ Mr Chewe said
Mr Chewe commended Government for leaving room for mining companies to operate, considering that mining was a strategic industry for Zambia.
