Rioters put on defence

By CHARLES MUSONDA
FOUR men have been found with a case to answer for taking part in riots that recently rocked Lusaka over gassing incidences.
Before Lusaka Chief Resident Magistrate Lameck Mwale yesterday were Nelson Chirwa, Angel Mumba, Alick Banda, and Victor Banda all of Linda compound.
“I have carefully examined evidence from five prosecution witnesses and I am of the firm view that a prima facie has been made out sufficiently to warrant putting the accused persons on their defence. I accordingly find the four accused persons with a case to answer and place each one of them on his defence,” Mr. Mwale said. Earlier, detective Chief Inspector Joseph Nkunde of Chilanga police station testified that on February 14, 2020 he received a distress call that Linda police post was under siege by rioting crowds that were throwing stones and other objects at the building and motor vehicles parked there, causing extensive damage to the structure and the vehicles.
Mr. Nkunde said acting on the report he organised a team of officers and upon reaching Linda they found that a riotous mob had blocked the road with burning tyres and other objects.
He said the mob threw stones and other objects at his battalion after which he instructed the officers to pursue the rioters and apprehend them. He said after some time a number of suspects were apprehended and taken to Chilanga police station. “Upon interviewing them I came to learn that some were apprehended by the Zambia Army personnel and others by the Zambia Police officers. Those apprehended by the police were Nelson Chirwa, Angel Mumba, Alick Banda and Victor Banda.
