State in the dark over Freemason society donations

By SANDRA MACHIMA
GOVERNMENT is investigating the existence of the Freemason Society in Zambia that has been making donations towards the fight against Covid-19, National Guidance and Religious Affairs Minister Godfrida Sumaili has said.
Reverend Sumaili revealed that she summoned and held a meeting with the leaders of the Freemasons yesterday but that they could not reveal more details about themselves.
She said at a press briefing yesterday that the leaders said they do not reveal their secrets.
Rev. Sumaili said Government was concerned about a secretive group that was going round making donations in Lusaka.
“We heard that the Freemason Society made donations and participated in the cleaning at Chilenje Market, so I called them and we had a meeting, but they said they operate with secrets. So as Government we are concerned because we have to know whoever we are working with to ensure our people are safe,” she said.
The minister said line ministries such as the Ministry of Home Affairs responsible for registering societies and organisations had been engaged over the existence of the Freemason Society in Zambia.
And Rev. Sumaili has asked religious associations and all the corporate entities to support the government in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.
She said there was need to be in unity and work as a team, by ensuring the health hygiene regulations were adhered to.
Members of the Masonic group allegedly pledged to do more to curb the Coronavirus and promised that the organisation would for the next six weeks take part in cleaning markets across the capital city.
