Teachers, pupils nabbed in police swoop

TWENTY-SIX pupils and three teachers have been arrested in Kitwe for unlawful gathering.
The teachers and pupils were cornered in a police dragnet after they were found conducting lessons at a tuition centre in Buchi Township in defiance of the current ban on gatherings.
Copperbelt Province Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga told the Sunday Nation yesterday that the suspects defied both the Presidential and Ministerial directive to avoid public gathering in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
State police and Kitwe City Council security officers carried out the operation.
“We on Thursday the 2nd of April, 2020 between 16:30 and 18:00 hours apprehended the suspects at Kasempa College of Education in Kitwe’s Buchi Township. The suspects were found attending GCE Civic Education lessons at the time of their apprehension,” she said.
Ms Katanga said that of the 26 suspects, 10 were males while 16 were females.
Ms. Katanga however warned the public to avoid trying to go against the directives and laid down measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic.
