By MULENGA MUSONDA

A JEALOUS husband who even after going on separation with his wife but consistently tried to make her life hard by always stalking and wanting to know who she was with has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour by the Choma Fast Track Court for Gender Based Violence for assault.

Principal Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo found it incumbent that 33-year-old Clement Kanji of Mapanza chiefdom sees the inside of a prison cell for would-be offenders to take a leaf and learn from his fate.

In this case, Kanji was facing one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm contrary to section 248 Chapter 87 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that Kanji on Valentine’s Day – February 14, 2021, instead of trying to reconcile with his wife, Abigail Halubwana, opted to assault her and thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm

When he appeared for plea, he admitted to the charge and explained that he only slapped her after finding her with another man.

According to the facts presented by Public Prosecutor Pearson Chilumbu, it appeared like the separation with his wife did not seem to sit well with Kanji who constantly kept on visiting her in case she was going out with other men.

He said, on the fateful day, Kanji just emerged from a maize field and beat up his wife who was coming from church before she was rescued by congregants.

After finding him guilty, Magistrate Mupemo in passing the jail sentence told Kanji to be an ambassador of change in the fight against gender-based violence.
