Milenge businessman nabbed for defilement

A 20-year-old businessman in Milenge district has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl, contrary to section 138 of the penal code, Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia. 

The suspect has been identified as Fanwell Kunda of Mununshi village in chief Sokontwe’s area. 

 Luapula Province Police Commissioner Chilije Nyirenda confirmed the incident in an interview with ZANIS today. 

 Mr. Nyirenda revealed that the incident occurred on 31st December 2020. He explained that the suspect allegedly enticed the victim with a K20 note during the New Year crossover celebrations  at Mununshi market and later went to his house with her where he had carnal knowledge of her. 

“On 30th January 2021, the mother to the victim asked her if she had had her menses but she said no. The mother asked the victim again on 10th February 2021, the girl had still not seen her monthly period,” Mr. Nyirenda said. 

He said mother to the victim was therefore prompted to take her daughter to Milenge district hospital on 12th February 2021 where a pregnancy test was conducted. 

 “The laboratory test came out positive. The victim is one and a half months pregnant,” the Police Commissioner said. 

 Mr. Nyirenda said the mother later lodged a complaint to Milenge police post and the suspect has since been apprehended. 

 He said the suspect was charged and will appear in court soon.
