RESIDENTS of Lusaka’s Bauleni compound have appealed to the local leadership to facilitate the construction of a bus shelter near Bauleni Health Centre.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Ackim Sinyangwe, a bus operator, said patients and other members of the public using the facility found it hard to access transport at the station, especially during the rainy season.

Mr Sinyangwe said that residents faced serious challenges during harsh weather conditions and there was need for the local authority to look into their request.

He said that residents and especially school going children had for a long time been struggling to find shelter while waiting to catch a bus and they opted to abscond from school when it rained heavily.

“It’s really a challenge especially during the rainy season because there is nowhere to seek shelter; you will find that someone wants to get on a bus but because there is no shelter outside the health post, they will be stranded.

‘‘I think it would be better for the local authority to consider putting up a shelter here, so that people have at least somewhere to stand during harsh weather conditions,” he said.

Another concerned resident Gloria Mumbi said that a bus shelter would be convenient for commuters as they wait for public transport.

She charged that there where instances where patients would faint due to lack of shelter to sit on because of the heat from the sun while they waited to get on a bus.

“As you know, this station is near a clinic and you find that sick people will be here waiting for a bus but because of the sun and the lack of seats, many of them fail to endure and in the end pass out,” she said.
