WORKS on the construction of Kuku community sports complex in Nkoloma Ward 1 in Chawama constituency is progressing well as the contractor is excavating the ground as well as putting up slabs.

A check by the Daily Nation found the contractor Avic International on site, excavating the area, grading and putting slabs.

Site manager engineer Jerome Liu said the project, which is a donation to the people of Kuku compound through the area councilor Tasila Lungu, is expected to be completed next month.

Mr Liu said the complex will comprise a modern netball, football and basketball courts with terraces, a car park as well as ablution block, among other amenities.

Meanwhile, residents have thanked area councilor Ms Lungu for the initiative which is meant to empower women and youths in different sports disciplines.

Simon Mafuta, a Kuku resident, said the area is known for criminal activities because most youths lacked entertainment and empowerment activities, hence crime levels were ever on the increase.

“This facility will benefit more youths including women some of whom in the end they will be selected to serious clubs as well as playing in the national term,” he said. Kelvin Kavindele said the sports facility will benefit many people especially the youths because the  land on which it stands had been idle for a long time and was being used for criminal activities.

“We are very happy as youths from Kuku compound; for the first time we are having such a facility and this will help in reducing  immorality as well as crime among the community,” said Mr Kavindele.

And the councillor said she will ensure that people of Nkoloma ward, and Kuku residents in particular, benefited from the project and she will ensure that she lobbied for more projects for the betterment of the community.

Other residents have appealed to the councillor to allow the contractor to put up a police post within the complex so that vandals could be arrested.
