AN outbreak of chickenpox has been reported in some parts of Luangwa district of the Lusaka Province which has affected about 27 people.

Luangwa district health director, Hardington Siwale confirmed the outbreak and said that four health posts had established the outbreak of the disease.

Dr Siwale said that the disease was reported in Kasinsa which recorded 16 cases, Chitope had one, Mangelengele six and Luangwa Boma had four.

“The outbreak is not severe and that so far only 27 people had been affected by the disease which hit the district last week. We have not recorded any deaths so far,” said Dr. Siwale.

He said that so far the disease has attacked adults only and miraculously spared children.  “Only adults have been affected by the disease and no case of children has been reported so far. We are however trying to verify if any children have been affected so that they can be isolated and stopped from going to school to prevent its escalation,” said Dr Siwale

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Dr. Siwale said the disease was in localised areas and that it had not spread because it had been contained by the health workers. He said that strict measures had been taken to ensure that those affected were isolated from the rest of the community to avoid the disease from spreading to other areas. Dr. Siwale said that the district hospital was doing everything possible to ensure that the disease did not spread to other areas and that preventive measures had been taken by providing enough medicines at the rural clinic in Kasinsa.
