PRESIDENT EDGR Lungu says law students can now acquire rich and valuable information in their studies from a locally produced book published by Speaker, Dr Patrick Matibini a veteran in Zambian law and practice.
The President said it was gratifying to see that candidates for legal practitioners qualifying examinations, legal practitioners, Magistrates and Judges of the Superior Courts were now privileged to refer to local works done by experts in the country.
He was speaking at the book launch ‘Zambian Civil Procedure, Commentary and Cases’ written by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Mr Justice Dr Patrick Matibini, SC, held at the Pamodzi Hotel, in Lusaka.
“What is most exciting about this project is that the information is drawn from the Zambian context, meaning that, users of the book will find it very helpful because the context is very local.
“This demonstrates your relentless commitment to the development of the body of knowledge and general human development in Zambia and beyond. Given your track record, I trust that this is just the beginning of many more publications to come from you,” President Lungu said.
He said the book must be celebrated because few people in the legal fraternity, as in other fields, have managed to put their knowledge and experiences, onto paper.
He urged other professionals in Zambians to emulate Dr Justice Matibini, “…especially all the senior lawyers to ensure that they make their contribution to the development of the justice system in Zambia by writing books and articles in various journals”.
He said if all professions document and produce books derived from their experiences and even fiction stories of their imaginative world, Zambian libraries would be filled with locally authored books.
“We should all be inspired by our colleague and emulate his good works so that long after we leave service, our experiences, knowledge and thinking should be immortalized in books and articles we have written,” he said.
He said Government would like to see human development to upgrade knowledge to strengthen reading programmes as an investment in research and information centres.
